SUMMARY:Art of Spiritual Learning
DESCRIPTION:The path of spiritual learning is a journey from the external to the internal. From information to knowldege and from knowledge to experience leading to realization. We find in Vedanta the 3 steps of learning; Śravaṇa (listening) is the first step in the process of learning. It involves active and focused listening to the teachings of a Guru. Manana (reflection/contemplation/clearing of doubts) is the second step and involves reflecting on what has been learned and clearing any doubts that may arise. Nididhyasana (meditation on the truth/integration/experience) is the final step and involves meditating on what has been learned and integrating it into one’s life. \nIn these special online study with Rabindra Sahu\, we will learn this ancient art of spiritual learning. \nAs our Master Swami Veda Bharati would often remind us that it is not possible to put a price on the teachings received\, there is no course fee for this course. Loving donations from the heart may be offered and will support the ashram. \nTeacher: Rabindra Sahu\nBegins: 22 July 2023 (Saturday)\nThe 6 sessions will be organized over three weekends (Saturday and Sunday) at 6-7 PM IST (Indian Standard Time) from 22 July – 6 Aug\, 2023.\nKindly convert to your country’s time-zone accordingly.\nMedium: Online through Zoom\nRequest: Kindly join only if you are able to commit to all the 6 sessions\, as the topics are progressive and systematic.\nLast Date for Registration: 21 July\, 2023 (Friday)\nFor Registrations/Inquiries/Donations: ahymsin@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Contemplations on Hastamalaka Stotram
DESCRIPTION:When Sri Adi Sankaracharya enquires from a boy: ‘Who are you\, my child?’ The response of the boy came to be revered as ‘Hastamalaka-stotram’. Composed by Hastāmalaka Acharya\, a disciple of Adi Sankaracharya\, the Hastāmalaka Stotraṁ is a short Vedāntic text of twelve verses that succinctly reveal the Knowledge of the Self. The greatness of this composition can be gauged by the fact that Sri Adi Sankaracharya himself wrote a commentary on it. It is extraordinary that the master of masters would compose commentary upon the work of his young student. This indicates\, not only the greatness of Hastamalaka’s verses\, but also the magnanimity of the Guru\, Adi Sankaracharya. \nSince\, to this young boy the knowledge of Atma-vidya was as clear as ‘a gooseberry’ (amalaka) kept on one’s palm (hasta)\, Acharya Sankara named him ‘Hastamalaka’\, and he became famous as one of the four renowned disciples of the Acharya. Hastamalaka Stotram is a contemplative text\, born of direct experience and is therefore profound in content and is truly a text for deep reflection and meditation. \nIn these special online study with Rabindra Sahu\, we will contemplate upon this beautiful and rich text of Vedanta\, and try to learn ways of applying this knowledge in our daily life. \nAs our Master Swami Veda Bharati would often remind us that it is not possible to put a price on the teachings received\, there is no course fee for this course. Loving donations from the heart may be offered and will support the ashram during the pandemic. \nTeacher: Rabindra Sahu\nBegins: 6 May 2023 (Saturday)\nThe 8 sessions will be organized over four weekends (Saturday and Sunday) at 6-7 PM IST (Indian Standard Time) from 6 – 28 May\, 2023.\nKindly convert to your country’s time-zone accordingly.\nMedium: Online through Zoom\nRequest: Kindly join only if you are able to commit to all the 8 sessions\, as the topics are progressive and systematic.\nLast Date for Registration: 5 May\, 2023 (Friday)\nFor Registrations/Inquiries/Donations: ahymsin@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Contemplations on Bhagavad-Gita - Chapter One
DESCRIPTION: \n\nTimes of despair prod us into enquiry and can be our stepping stones on the path of divinity. \nIt was in such a state of anguish that Arjuna faced on the battleground when he turned to Lord Krishna for guidance. The first chapter of the Bhagavad-gita is titled Arjuna Vishada Yoga\, the yoga of Arjuna’s despondency and sorrow. In a state of confusion and dejection\, Arjuna the mightiest warrior of his times sinks into grief and depression\, and casts his bow and arrow aside. Sri Krishna as his charioteer imparts the teaching of the Bhagavad-gita to bring Arjuna out of the deluded state. \nThe Bhagavad-gita is a condensed essence of wisdom of the Upanishads. The first chapter provides the foundation for this major text as a starting point of the enquiry of a seeker. Many readers pay less attention to the first chapter. However\, it provides valuable insights into human personality. It introduces the characters\, the participants in the war and their symbolic personalities that open up many psychological and philosophical lessons. \nIn this residential retreat with Rabindra Sahu\, we will attempt to study the Bhagavad-gita through a disciplined process of Study-Contemplation and Implementation (Shravana-Manana and Nidhidhyasana).

SUMMARY:Happiness is Your Creation
DESCRIPTION:To be happy is to live free of worries and disappointments. Yet this seems often elusive as we go about leading our day-to-day life. It is important thus to identify the causes of our unhappiness and find the direction that allows us to keep centered and joyful at all times. \nSwami Rama in his book by the same title has said\, “You are a Creation of God\, but happiness is your creation. You are equipped with everything you need to live a happy life. Your only job is to discover the source of happiness within and infuse your surroundings with that inner happiness.” \nIn this in-person retreat with Rabindra Sahu\, we explore the keys to unlocking the happiness within by learning to transform our habit patterns and by creating a harmonious balance between our body and mind. By cultivating the right attitude towards our duties\, relationships\, and our relative position in the world\, we can consciously create the conditions that allow us to live happily within and in this world.

SUMMARY:Spirituality: Transformation Within & Without
DESCRIPTION:Today\, we have access to every conceivable kind of knowledge about the world around us\, yet few of us have even the dimmest knowledge of our innermost selves. The ancient teachings of the Himalayan Tradition call on us all to return to the fundamental values of mankind\, especially as they are articulated by the sages. \nIn this residential retreat with Rabindra Sahu\, we will learn how to integrate these values in our own day-to-day life to find our own inner truth. \nAs Swami Rama has said in his book – Spirituality Transformation within & without\, “Nothing is more mysterious than life itself\, and there is no peace without penetrating that mystery. The mystery lies deep in the stream of life. There is an eternal knowledge\, not in the outer world\, but in the center of Consciousness.”

SUMMARY:Freedom from the Bondage of Karma
DESCRIPTION:Karma – the activity of doing and being – is traditionally symbolized as a rope of many strands made of actions\, thoughts\, desires\, and the latent\, subconscious tendencies of personality\, holding the human self in the bondage of suffering. \nSwami Rama’s book titled – “Freedom from the Bondage of Karma” offers a series of perspectives on man’s most significant responsibility—that of self-understanding. If we are to attempt to understand ourselves and the world through the possibilities available to us within Yoga and allied systems\, it becomes important for us to understand the full implications of karma as it appears within the yoga system. Analyzing the mechanisms of karma and the functioning of mind\, Swamiji demonstrates the kind of self-study each student of life must undertake to gain liberation and attain freedom from the bondage of karma. \nIn this residential retreat with Rabindra Sahu\, we will learn how karma has been understood in the Bhagavad Gita; what its effects are and how it functions\, including in terms of the human mind; and how it is related to our spiritual practice and our modern-day life. We will thus explore the ways that we can take control of our own destiny by making conscious efforts in choosing our actions\, thoughts and desires.

SUMMARY:An exploration into Sankhya Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:Sankhya philosophy\, founded by Rishi Kapila\, is the oldest system known in the history of Indian philosophy. Its basic principles serve as foundations for all other Indian philosophical systems in one way or another\, and therefore\, understanding of its basic principles is required to access the subtleties of all other philosophical systems\, including Yoga. \n\nThroughout his teachings\, Swami Veda Bharati emphasised that it is not possible to understand Patañjali’s Yoga Sutra unless one has a clear knowledge of the basic principles of the Sankhya Philosophy. In the philosophical traditions of India\, Sankhya and Yoga form a philosophical pair\, Sankhya being the darśana śāstra (Philosophical framework) and Yoga the prayoga śāstra (its practical application). \nThis week-long seminar with Pandit Priyadarshan (Pierre Lefebvre) will help the students to establish a good functional knowledge of the important categories and principles of classical Sankhya. The study will be focused around the original text of Sankhya philosophy\, the Tattva Samasa Sutra\, written by Rishi Kapila himself. \nWe will also explore how the application of the principles and categories of Sankhya philosophy find their way and translate in the Yoga Sutra of Patañjali\, as well as in other systems of traditional Indian knowledge.

SUMMARY:Peace Mantras from the Vedas
DESCRIPTION:Shanti Mantras\, or the Peace Mantras\, are the mantras used as invocations at the beginning and end of the recitations of the Upanishads and other ancient Indian scriptures. These mantras are also used as special prayers for ‘peace’ during everyday pujas and rituals. Some of these mantras also are recited within the Himalayan Tradition and the Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) ashram as part of our daily morning and evening prayers. \n\nThis short weekend workshop with Pandit Priyadarshan (Pierre Lefebvre) will offer the students an introduction into this unique category of mantras found in the vast body of Vedic literature. We will learn about the importance of these mantras and their spiritual meanings.
